Viburnum tinus is a popular garden shrub in the UK. In the winter it has beautiful shiny blue berries that look almost metallic. How do they do it? They don’t actually have any blue pigment in the fruits, but they have extraordinary structures in the outer cells’ surfaces, with globules of lipids inserted inside the cell walls in layers. It’s those layers that make the beautiful shiny blue.
